RE: Planning a trip to Amish Country next year help

We stayed in White Oak several years ago. It was quiet, shady and had a decent view as it sits up on a hill. At the time we were tent camping and mapquest routed us some convoluted way through northern Maryland. Worst part was I would not have been able to get our current TT under one of the RR bridges.

RE: Crude Oil at $82

Most of the run up in oil prices was due to several causes. First is was rising demand in countries like China and India. Second was major speculation in oil futures. And while we certainly have an imperfect system, the very last thing I want to see is some of the idiots on Capital Hill overseeing things. Greed alone is bad enough...greed and stupidity can be a disaster.

RE: Camping this weekend?10/11/08

Not in the NE and we can't go this weekend but plan at least five more weekends into early December if possible. I have to admit our TT is a little easier to keep warm than the PUP was.

RE: I connected the battery wrong....

Yeah, I tried to jump start a motorcycle once and hooked it up backwards. Blew the main fuse. Not hard to do...just check the fuses.

RE: Break Away cable

I have no opinion about jacking the TT to save the tires. I pulled my breakaway pin by accident and all you have to do is reinsert it. DO NOT leave the pin out with the batteries hooked up as this keeps power to the brakes and can cause damage to the magnets and possibly to the brakes.

RE: For a company that claimed solvency

I don't know how many of you are actually involved with corporate finance but most corporations operate on a line of credit. In our situation, we have always been profitable, we are very conservative and watch our costs...but...we operate on a line of credit. If the bank yanked the credit line, which many banks are doing now, we probably couldn't operate more than two weeks. All this bailout******is designed to to keep the credit lines available. If it doesn't work you will see a huge number of businesses fail, most without warning. Trust me baby.

RE: How are you and your RV during these times?

Forty nights so far and there are still some good weekends left in this part of the world. Because the ecomony is down we spent more time camping and less time in hotels and condos.:B:B:B

RE: Quick overnight tenting

Even though we have a TT we still keep three tents. One is a small (7x7) dome tent that sets up in about three minutes. We have a 12x12 cabin tent that takes about 12 minutes to set up, and we have a 12X16 monster that takes two people about 30 minutes to set up. Our DD's family uses them about three times a year. I guess we don't really need tents but I wouldn't get rid of them until they dry rot...you never know.

RE: Leveling and stabilizing with slideout question

Our slide is fairly small, sofa only, but I put a 12x12x2 block under each of the stabs and we don't seem to have any settling issues.

RE: Safe Trailer length

Our box size is 27' but we are about 30' from tip to rear bumper. So far we have not had any problem getting into sites. As noted sometimes we don't have enough room to keep the TV on the same site but those instances are rare.

Electric jack noise

We just had an Atwood electric tongue jack installed by the dealer. I am extremely excited about not having to crank any more...but...this jack seems to make a LOT of noise when it is under load. Dealer (who I have a lot of confidence in) says the sound is normal. Would appreciate feedback from those who have electric jacks and Atwoods in particular. Thanks.:h

I use a bypass kit and it takes less than 2 gallons of antifreeze to winterize the whole system.

RE: How long are you going to keep your current travel trailer?

We bought the current one with the plan to keep it 3-4 years. It is well adapted to what we use it for...weekending and week long vacations with the two small GC we have living with us. The plan is to move up in a few years to a larger TT or 5ver more suitable for half timing. Like any vehicle, your needs change over time.

RE: Cigar Smokers, Unite! What's your favorite cigar?

Romeo Y Julieta (sp), Montecristos, some Punchs. Either Lonsdale, Double Corona or Churchhill for size. Been known to smoke a few house brands from JR Cigars on occasion. Not much better than a decent cigar and a dram or two of Scotch to watch the sun go down over your campsite.
What's the difference between a $5 cigar and a $10 cigar? $5.

RE: Would you have paid?

Number 1...stranger approaching me in a parking lot is not likely to be well received. Number 2...some guy starts messing with my vehicle after I told him no is very likely to be confronted with the business end of a 40 caliber. Number 3...some stranger approaching DW in a parking lot will find that both numbers 1 and 2 apply.

RE: KOA starting to require their CG's to conform

We have stayed at several KOAs this year, mostly because they happened to be convenient to our activities. We have found them to be clean and apparently well run. The sites tend to be closer together than some private CGs and the prices tend toward the high side. Some are obviously better than others and we will continue to use them when convenient.
